Raversijde 1940-1945

During the second World War there was also a big activity in Raversijde.
At first there was in the proximity a coastal stronghold - battery Saltzwedel neu/Tirpitz and an airport.

They airport was bombarded many times during the war. But it didn't play a big strategic role during the war.

The coastal guns of the battery Saltzwedel neu/Tirpitz were an important stronghold during the second World War.
Many planes were hit on their way to or on their way back to Britain. The 21 of December 1943 Generalfeldmaarschall Rommel paid a visit to this battery.
Trough the intervention of Prins Charles the battery was saved from the demolition. The well preserved remainders of the Atlantikwall are now a tourist attraction for Raversijde.
