Raversijde before 1914 ...

On the boarder between Raversijde and Mariakerke, laid the museum of Stracké.
This museum was founded in 1897 by hotel-keeper and philanthropist August Stracké.
at the beginning of the first World War this building was completely destroyed by the Germans.
The rooms were impressive.
The walls and corridors were decorated with paintings and objects from our colony in Africa.
You could see different fish, birds, reptiles and winged insects in the rooms.
At the other side of Raversijde laid a Royal domain.
On this domain were 3 Suisse cottages build in the year 1904.
These cottages were probably only used for a daytrip to Raversijde.
during the first World War these cottages were pulled down to make place for the artillery guns of the battery Aachen.
Today only the base constructions gives us an idea of the place of the former cottages.
In the dunes, at the backside of these cottages, stood a lighthouse.

This lighthouse was pulled down by the German forces in the spring of 1915.

In 1897 the first tramway drove on the promenade between Ostend and Middelkerke. This tramway was exploited by 'Compagnie du Tramway électrique d'Ostende littoral'.
Only in the year 1908 a road was build on the promenade.
Together with this tramway a bus shelter was build in Raversijde.
This building stayed in use until after the war.
Later on it was pulled down and replaced by an ugly shelter.
